A caution though when using free online services is that the data they provide maybe out of date already. It would be better to avail the services of reliable companies to ensure that the data you will obtain are authentic.

Besides online sources there are other reliable sources which can run a criminal record check. There are the government and private retrievals services which can provide a more reliable assistance in obtaining a copy of a criminal background report of a person. Generally one can gain access to only to another’s “public” criminal data.  Search on the national level is not publicly available however. There are two main groups that can access the DPS-maintained data- the criminal justice agencies and the authorized non-criminal justice groups. These groups can help employers obtain a more detailed check.

Private companies who provide criminal background screening services often perform both criminal and civil background checks. These companies actually have their own databases which is cross checked with many different sources in order to make sure that the information they have is correct and reliable. They make use of FBI screenings and the National Instant Criminal Background Check System as well as a more detailed FBI report. This is a similar system is used by law enforcement agents from their vehicles when to determine whether a car is stolen as well as to know if the driver has any outstanding warrants of arrest. The advantage of using FBI records in criminal background checks is that they cover all 50 states plus the District of Columbia so the search is not just limited to one state but completely cover the entire country.

It would be prudent and sensible to do a search on the background of a person.
